Product Description
No Description Available.
Genre: Television
Rating: NR
Release Date: 29-JUN-2004
Media Type: DVDAmazon.com
“Jen is a cheerleader and Jack’s on the football team. I got sane and everyone else went crazy?” That’s how Andie (Meredith Monroe) sums up the topsy-turvy beginning to the third season of Dawson’s Creek, in which nothing seems to be as it should and the series takes a major turn. It’s junior year at Capeside High, and Jack (Kerr Smith), the town’s resident gay teen, is indeed on the football team, and Jen (Michelle Williams) finds herself the object of unexpected and unwelcome popularity among her fellow students, especially the freshman quarterback (Michael Pitt). Pacey (Joshua Jackson) finds that his relationship with Andie can’t be restored, and Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), after the events of last year, both think it’s for the best that they’re no longer together–they just never think it at the same time. Significant events include the friends starting to date outside their circle, Dawson’s giving up some of his aspirations, a crisis for the school’s new principal, a college tour, and the openings of the Potter Bed & Breakfast and Leery’s Fresh Fish. But the Dawson-Joey relationship is still the heart of the Creek, and it comes to a head in one of the series’ most memorable episodes, “The Longest Day,” and then the season finale. Even in its first season without series creator Kevin Williamson, Dawson’s Creek still had plenty of punch.

On the DVDs, executive producer Paul Stupin does his usual commentary track for two episodes, and he’s joined by Kerr Smith. They discuss the series itself, Smith’s character, and Smith’s subsequent career more than the events of the episodes. The second-season DVD set disappointed many fans by replacing a large portion of the music, and that trend continues in the third season, most surprisingly in the loss of Paula Cole’s theme song. Instead, the opening credits feature Jann Arden’s “Run Like Mad,” which was used briefly in the international broadcast. Stupin explains the switch as an attempt to do something different and creative, but then admits there was also “a bit of an economic reality.” Fortunately, the DVDs do have John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Mary Beth Maziarz’s “Daydream Believers”–songs that in dramatic context simply could not have been replaced–and it could be argued that a veteran viewer might skip the opening credits anyway. Still, for many fans, the music made Dawson’s Creek what it was, and without all of it–especially the theme song–the DVDs seem like a compromise rather than a permanent keepsake. –David Horiuchi

Product Description
The popular spin-off of the beloved Mary Tyler Moore Show finally arrives on DVD. It all begins as Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) goes home to New York for a visit. When she unexpectedly meets the guy, Rhoda decides to move back. Joe Gerard (David Groh), the ruggedly handsome and divorced owner of a demolition company, is the perfect match for Rhoda. The couple works hard to keep their relationship solid in spite of, and sometimes because of, nonstop interference by Rhodas manipulative mother Ida (played by the brilliant Nancy Walker), her needy, depressed sister Brenda (Julie Kavner, The Simpsons), her loving but ineffectual father Martin (Harold Gould, The Sting) and, of course, Carlton the Doorman. In the first season, Rhoda and Joe met, fell in love, got married and set up life together. This first season won Golden Globe Awards for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy. Valerie Harper won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy that year. Rhoda would go on to win our hearts during its five season run.

Bonus Features:

Remembering Rhoda: Creators James L. Brooks and Allan Burns and stars Julie Kavner and Harold Gould look back at the creation and success of Rhoda.Amazon.com
It’s easy to see why Rhoda fans are ecstatic that the series has finally appeared on DVD (with all 24 first-season episodes on four discs), a mere 35 years after its broadcast debut. Shows like this are the comedy equivalent of comfort food: uncomplicated, reliable, not very spicy but tasty and filling. Sitcom meatloaf, you might say. Spun off from Mary Tyler Moore by co-creators James L. Brooks (whose formidable resume as a writer, director, and producer also includes The Simpsons, Taxi, and movies like Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets) and Allan Burns, the show finds Valerie Harper’s Rhoda Morgenstern returning to her native New York after a decade in Minneapolis. What begins as a short visit turns into a full-blown homecoming when she meets and immediately falls for the manly-but-sensitive Joe Gerard (David Groh); Rhoda at first lives with dowdy, amusingly neurotic sister Brenda (Julie Kavner, later to achieve considerable fame and fortune as the voice of Marge Simpson), but we’re barely a third of the way into the season when she and Joe decide to tie the knot.

Debuting in 1974 (it ran for five years), Rhoda is an interesting reflection of its times. Harper’s character is a feminist (”Thank you, Ms. Magazine,” she says when Brenda congratulates her for taking the initiative with Joe), but still old-fashioned enough to balk at moving in with a man before they’re married. Sexual revolution notwithstanding, references to sex are chaste and fleeting. And in this pre-PC era, the show is unabashedly, old-school ethnic, with its broad Bronx accents and Rhoda’s stereotypically hovering, meddling, hard-to-please Jewish mother (hilariously portrayed by Nancy Walker). But if it seems a little out of date, Rhoda makes up for that simply by being funny and likable; the hour-long “Rhoda’s Wedding,” one of the highest-rated TV episodes of its time, is a riot, featuring Harper’s former Mary Tyler Moore mates (Moore, Ed Asner, Gavin MacLeod, Georgia Engel, and the inspired Cloris Leachman) having an absolute field day. And let’s not forget show producer Lorenzo Music as the drunken Carlton the Doorman, never seen but often heard via intercom. The sole bonus item is a paltry reminiscence with Brooks and Burns but none of the actors. –Sam Graham

Description
The Duke cousins, Vance and Coy, come to Hazzard to embark on a new series of adventures, while Bo and Luke race the NASCAR circuit. Following the phenomenal success of this franchise on DVD, Dukes Season 5 will street in conjunction with the theatrical release. The Duke family is back for more down-home adventure in The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete Fifth Season, now on DVD in this 8-disc, 22 episode collector’s set.Amazon.com
The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete Fifth Season marks the ignominious year in which (gasp) Dukes mainstays Bo (John Schneider) and Luke (Tom Wopat) Duke took a hiatus from the series, the result of a contract feud between the two stars and the show’s producers. That disagreement proved considerable: Schneider and Wopat stayed off Dukes for 18 of the season’s 22 episodes. But while their absence puts a dent in the ongoing Dukes zaniness, replacement cousins Coy (Byron Cherry) and Vance (Christopher Mayer) Duke do an adequate job of filling the seats of the General Lee. The new boys are also on to the wily ways of Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke), who seems to be ratcheting up his brand of felonious mayhem, going so far as to rob banks and jewelry stores, swindle landowners, incite kidnapping, and plot payroll heists. Of course, he also spends half his time still trying to frame the Dukes for one thing or another, including feisty cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach) and grizzled Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle)–Boss Hogg’s former moonshine partner. And, yes, he’s more intent than ever on grabbing the Dukes’ property, along with everything else.

A familiar face returns in the fifth season: Deputy Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer), gone from the series since 1980 but now rejoining the burlesque that is the office of Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best) and his goofy underling, Deputy Cletus Hogg (Rick Hurst). Season highlights include “The Revenge of Hughie Hogg,” in which Boss Hogg’s ever-scheming nephew (Jeff Altman) makes a return appearance, this time with his eye on defeating Roscoe in the latter’s re-election bid for top lawman. (Hughie being Hughie, he blackmails his uncle into supporting his run.) “Ding, Dong, the Boss Is Dead” finds Coy and Vance actually helping Boss Hogg escape an old moonshine runner’s certain revenge by staging their diminutive nemesis’ funeral. “Comrade Duke” concerns a Russian gymnast who seeks asylum at the Dukes’ farm. Bo and Luke return in time for a few adventures, capping the season with “Daisy’s Shotgun Wedding,” in which the overprotected beauty strikes out on her own and is snatched away by a moonshiner’s son, who wants to marry her. –Tom Keogh

Description
20 episodes on 6 discs: Emissary Part I, Emissary Part II, Past Prologue, A Man Alone, Babel, Captive Pursuit, Q-Less, Dax, The Passenger, Move Along Home, The Nagus, Vortex, Battle Lines, The Storyteller, Progress, If Wishes Were Horses, The Forsaken, Dramatis Personae, Duet, In the Hands of the Prophets. Amazon.com
Of all the spinoff TV incarnations of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine had the hardest job persuading an audience to watch. By all accounts, Gene Roddenberry had concerns about the idea before his death in 1991. It took two more years to develop, and when it finally aired in 1993 reasons for that concern were evident right away. The show was dark (literally), characters argued a lot, no one went anywhere, and the neighboring natives were hardly ever friendly. Yet for all that the show went against the grain of the Great Bird’s original vision of the future, it undeniably caught the mood of the time, incorporating a complex political backdrop that mirrored our own.

In the casting, there was a clear intent to differentiate the show from its predecessors. Genre stalwarts Tony Todd and James Earl Jones were considered for Commander Sisko before Avery Brooks. The one letdown at the time was that Michelle Forbes did not carry Ensign Ro across from The Next Generation, but when the explosive Nana Visitor defiantly slapped her hand on a console in the pilot episode, viewers knew they were in for a different crew dynamic. In fact, the two-part pilot show (”The Emissary”) is largely responsible for DS9’s early success. Mysterious, spiritual, claustrophobic, funny, and feisty, it remains the most attention-grabbing series opener (apart from the original series’) the franchise has had. The first year may have relied on a few too many familiar faces–like Picard, Q, and Lwaxana Troi–but these were more than outweighed by refreshingly detailed explorations of cultures old and new (Trill, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi). As it turned out, Deep Space Nine was the boldest venture into Roddenberry’s galaxy that had been (or ever would be) seen. –Paul Tonks

Product Description
Movie DVDAmazon.com
One of the most curious animated series to come from the Adult Swim stable, Frisky Dingo might be best described as a cartoon superhero take on Seinfeld’s formula: a show that’s about nothing, but one that’s also funny and fascinating all the same. The brainchild of Sealab 2021 creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the premise of Frisky Dingo concerns millionaire playboy Xander Crews, who moonlights as costumed crime fighter Awesome-X. Having vanquished his last archvillain, Crews is urged by his employees to return to his office to sort out the financial mess created by his alter ego. But the arrival of the monstrous Killface and his Annihilatrix (which will pull the launch the Earth into the sun) lures him back into… well, not so much action as lots and lots of paperwork. The resulting episodes of Season 1 concern Crews and Killface’s attempts to fund their respective projects while dealing with distractions like Simon, Killface’s incorrigible son, and Crews’ exasperated second in command Stan. To say that Frisky Dingo is unlike any other superhero series on television (and very few animated series in general) is a distinct understatement, but there’s a method behind the madness: that the vagaries of life often get in the way of the loftiest of goals. Of course, that doesn’t explain the show’s endless non sequiters and moments of true surrealism, like Awesome-X’s clueless henchmen, the X-tacles, or episodes like “Emergency Room,” in which the entire cast of characters spends the full running time suffering from various horrible injuries. Maybe it’s best to think of this as meta-superhero action. All 13 episodes of Frisky Dingo’s debut season are compiled on this single disc (each episode runs just 11 minutes), but sadly, no supplemental features are included. That’s unfortunate, if for no other reason than they might have provided some sort of explanation for the show’s motives. — Paul Gaita

Product Description
Depicts the life of a frontier family on the Great Plains towards the end of the nineteenth century.
Genre: Television
Rating: G
Release Date: 2-APR-2007
Media Type: DVDAmazon.com
The ninth season of Little House on the Prairie was re-invented as Little House: A New Beginning after star Michael Landon decided to leave the series. (He continued to produce, direct and write for the show.) The first episode began with the departure of Landon’s Pa Ingalls, who fell on hard economic times and moved his family to the city . He returned for just one harrowing two-parter, “Home Again,” in which son Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) battled a morphine addiction. In Landon’s absence, it was up to the other denizens of Walnut Grove to provide drama, and provide they did. The meddling, gossipy Harriet Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) played town villain, followed by her whiny adopted daughter Nancy (Allison Balson), who was annoying but never as deliciously wicked as her predecessor Nellie (Alison Arngrim, who makes a welcome guest appearance). Laura (Melissa Gilbert) is all grown up and living with husband Almanzo (Dean Butler) and their daughter Rose. The show also cast a pre-scandal Shannen Doherty as Jenny Wilder to fill the spunky young protagonist role vacated by Gilbert.

Little House continued its run of darker stories in this season, from a crazed father (Robert Loggia) who shoots his daughter and wife to a suicide attempt by Jenny after her father dies, filling in other episodes with fluffy schmaltz featuring some of the other townsfolk (you know they’re desperate when an entire show is about a wayward orangutan). The series also liked to feature outcasts teaching the town lessons in tolerance: in one case a circus midget can’t get a job because of his looks, and a “wild boy” turns out just to be an abused mute. Despite its attempts to fill the void left by Pa and Ma Ingalls with new characters, however, the long-running series lost its spark without Landon and did not last after the ninth season.

The boxed set includes an 86-page booklet: Little House on the Prairie A-Z by historian Patrick Loubatiere, who also interviews Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim in the DVD bonus features. The interviews don’t reveal much, other than Loubatiere’s smugness for knowing more about Little House than the stars of the show. –Ellen A. Kim
